😴 Too much day sleep:
Have you found that having a nanna nap 👵🏻 during the day can push your bedtime later or cause you to wake up more throughout the night? 😫 The same thing can happen with our babies. Too much daytime sleep which can make it difficult for them settle at night, lead to frequent night wakes, and cause early rising 🆘
🥱 Overtired at bedtime:
If your baby is overtired at bedtime, this increases 📈 their stress hormone, cortisol, making it difficult for them to settle 🫠. This can sometimes be mistaken for not being tired enough, but in reality, they are too overtried, which often leads to fragmented night sleep and early rising ⚠️
🥶 Too cold:
Especially now with the freeeezing nights in Australia 🇦🇺, your baby could wake due to feeling too cold ❄️. This can be particularly noticeable if they seem more unsettled around 2-3:00am, when their core body temperature is at its lowest 📉. That is why we always* recommend dressing your baby in pajamas with a TOG-rating, to ensure they are appropriately dressed for the coldest* part of the night 🥰
🍼 Hunger:
Depending on your baby’s age, they may wake due to genuine hunger. Please keep in mind that it is developmentally normal for babies to continue night feeds until they are fully established on solids 🥦. However, we want to ensure they don’t fall into a pattern of reverse cycling, where they consume more calories at night rather than during the day 😬
🧸 Sleep associations:
Your baby may wake up if they have a particular association with falling asleep, such as being fed or rocked to sleep 👩🏻🍼. This can occur when they partially wake between sleep cycles and find that their sleeping environment has changed from how they originally went to sleep, needing those same conditions to go back to sleep again 🌸
